The Truth About Professional Modeling Agencies - Tips For Parents

Teens and their moms often see the images we produce and they ask “Does my son or daughter have what it takes to become a professional model?”
Here are a few tips and pointers to help guide you before you pursue modeling through an agency.
1. BE VERY CAREFUL
The unfortunate truth is, there are tons of so-called modeling agencies out there, and many are not what you think. Modeling agency scams are everywhere. There are literally hundreds of “agencies” all over the US that bank on teens and parents walking through their doors with high hopes and dreams. They are great at making you feel like you’ve got the look when in reality, they tell the next guy or girl that walks in the door after you, the exact same thing.
Some of the most vulnerable teens and parents are ones who have recently had a successful photo session with a great photographer. Their images are amazing and your friends will encourage you to look into modeling agencies. Suddenly, you wonder if they may be professional model material. This is a normal reaction after seeing amazing images of your son or daughter.
The truth is, a great photographer can make you look like a model and can (and should) produce amazing images. That’s why they are great photographers.
However, being a professional model, is something entirely different from doing a photo session. Auditioning for a job is often filled with long days, lots of waiting, and unfortunately, often comes with lots of rejection.
2. WATCH FOR AGENCIES WHO WANT YOU TO PAY, WANT YOU TO SIGN UP FOR CLASSES or WANT YOU TO USE A PARTICULAR PHOTOGRAPHER
Reputable modeling agencies will not ask you to pay fees to sign with them. They will not ask you to use a specific photographer. If they ask you to pay any fees, pay to have comp cards made through them or ask you to sign up for any classes, Beware!
3. DO YOU HAVE THE LOOK?
Most professional modeling agencies have a very specific look they want and it’s probably very different than what you might expect. Generally, they are not looking for pictures of you at your best, with your make up on point and in the cutest outfits. Rather, they want to see your natural face, with no make up, and hair pulled back. They will also want to see your full body, with form fitted clothing.
4. DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Parents who are anxious to get their children or teens into modeling should do a lot of homework and investigation before pursuing any modeling agencies. Be sure you know what you are getting into. Make sure you KNOW firsthand, the reputation of the agency. Don’t just take on line reviews at face value. Talk to actual people who have used a particular agency. Ask questions and find out what their experience has been.
